Effective January 8, 2024, Jonathan Mildenhall assumes the role of the inaugural Group Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for Rocket Companies. In this capacity, he will orchestrate a cohesive and compelling voice across all entities under the Rocket Companies umbrella, with direct oversight of the marketing and communications teams for the company's diverse brands.
Widely recognized as one of the foremost marketing innovators globally, Mr. Mildenhall has earned a stellar reputation for consistently delivering impactful campaigns that cut through the noise and attain social relevance. With over three decades of experience in building and promoting prominent brand-focused enterprises, he co-founded TwentyFirstCenturyBrand in 2018, a leading branding and marketing consultancy. The consultancy has played a pivotal role in helping influential companies, including Pinterest, LinkedIn, Zalando, PepsiCo, NextDoor, and Walmart, scale their impact. Mr. Mildenhall will retain his position as Chairman of the firm.
Before establishing his consultancy, Mr. Mildenhall served as the first CMO of Airbnb, steering the marketing team through an unprecedented period of company growth. During his tenure, Airbnb evolved from 400,000 homes on the platform to over 4.5 million residences in 191 countries in just three and a half years. Under his leadership, Airbnb aired its inaugural Super Bowl commercial and established several co-marketing partnerships with culturally significant brands to enhance awareness and credibility.
Prior to his role at Airbnb, Mr. Mildenhall held the position of SVP Integrated Marketing Communication and Design Excellence at The Coca-Cola Company for 14 years. Notably, he spearheaded the globally acclaimed "Open Happiness" initiative, contributing to the company's fastest profit increase in two decades. His campaign became one of the most awarded marketing platforms in the company's history.
Mr. Mildenhall's extensive career also includes roles such as Head of Strategy at Mother (2006–2007) and Managing Director at TBWA (2001–2005). In 1990, he commenced his career as an Account Manager at McCann Erickson, where he was among the agency's initial hires from ethnic minorities.
In recognition of his industry influence, Mr. Mildenhall served as Jury President for Creative Effectiveness at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2017. He was listed in Forbes' "The World’s Most Influential CMOs 2017" and The Financial Times' "EMpower 100 Ethnic Minority Leaders" rankings that same year. In 2016, he received Adweek's Brand Genius award and was acknowledged by Business Insider as the 7th most innovative CMO globally. In 2013, Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity honored him as Creative Marketer of The Year.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Mildenhall served as a Trustee of HRH Prince of Wales’ The Prince's Trust from 2002 to 2005. He holds a degree in Business and Finance, Business Administration, Management, and Operations from The Manchester Metropolitan University (1988–1990) and completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 2005.
