Shaquille O'Neal, the legendary NBA superstar and philanthropist, has made his first foray into the world of edtech by leading a $2.5 million seed round investment in Edsoma, a startup founded by CEO Kyle Wallgren. What makes this investment unique is that Wallgren didn't approach O'Neal for money; instead, he sought the basketball icon's help in promoting Edsoma's AI-powered reading, education, and communication platform for children.

O'Neal, known for his passion for helping children, was initially skeptical when Wallgren explained the concept behind Edsoma. However, his skepticism turned to belief after trying out the product firsthand. O'Neal stated, "When he talked about it, I didn't believe it. And then when he showed me, I believed it."

Edsoma's app employs an AI reading assistant to assist users in improving their reading and communication skills. The app is available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store, offering a free version for one child user with access to three books. For a monthly subscription fee of $9.99, users can upgrade to a premium version that accommodates four users, provides unlimited books, group video calling, and peer reading sessions. The startup also offers a yearly membership at $99.99, mirroring the features of the monthly subscription.

The rapid growth of Edsoma is impressive. It started with just 300 paid users, expanded to 1,000, and reached 9,000 users within its second month of operation. Wallgren has ambitious plans for the future, aiming to raise a Series A round of funding within a few months, with a target of $10 million to $15 million.

What's more, Edsoma may expand beyond its current offerings in the near future. O'Neal's interest in using the platform to learn Spanish led Wallgren to realize its potential as an ESL (English as a Second Language) tool. As a result, Edsoma could evolve to teach reading in languages like Spanish. Initially targeting users in kindergarten to fourth grade, Wallgren envisions Edsoma becoming the number one literacy resource in the United States, with plans to outpace competitors and lead the literacy education space.

Shaquille O'Neal's involvement in Edsoma highlights the growing importance of edtech in shaping the future of education, especially for children. With O'Neal's support and a solid foundation, Edsoma is poised to make a significant impact on literacy and communication skills among young learners.
