BET cancels its Nightly News Program

Created by BlackEntrepreneurProfiles.com

In a move that should not suprise anyone, BET has decided to cancel its nightly news program. Since its sale to VIACOM, BET has been cancelling most of its public affairs programs like Teen Summit and Lead Story in recent years.

BET representives said it will air news briefs throughout the day, air specials about news worthy events and will run a new urban affairs show four times a year.

Founder Robert Johnson who still services as Chairman said that BET is not lessening is commitment to news but is trying to improve the way it presents the news on a daily basis. However one can read a little deeper into this and see that the focus of BET is becoming more inline with MTV its sister station and moving away from mainly targeting a black audience for a more mainstream one which has no interrest in news from a black prespective.

BET president and chief operating officer Debra Lee said, "With 24-hour news networks and everyone getting news off the Internet, our audience doesn't want to wait until 11 p.m. to find out what the news is." You be the judge.
